When Can I Plant A New Season Potted Rose?

New season potted roses are not ready to be planted as their roots are not fully established. They should be kept outside and watered frequently, then should then be ready for planting from May/June onwards. To check if your rose is ready to plant, securely hold the base of the rose with one hand and then turn the plant upside down and begin to lift the pot off. If you see a system of white, firm roots around the compost you can lift away the rest of the pot and plant in its final planting position. However, if you notice the compost starts to fall apart, place the plant back in the container and check again in a few weeks by repeating the same process. 

Receiving a new season potted rose is a great idea if you have not yet decided where you want to plant the rose as it gives you plenty of time to decide. They also make a fabulous rose to give as a gift as they also do not need to decide straightaway where to plant it. 

Should I Still Water A New Season Potted Rose?

It is just as important to water a new season potted rose as it is to water other container plants, especially as the weather gets warmer. Never let the compost dry out completely as you could risk killing the plant. We pot our roses using specially formulated slow-release fertiliser, this will give the plant enough feed for its first year. Ensure the plant is in its final position by the end of its first year with you as it will outgrow its original container and need the extra space for the roots to grow.

Ready To Plant Straight Away?

If you are ready to plant your rose upon arrival, you may wish to opt for the bareroot roses instead which are available for delivery from November to March, these are ready to be planted upon arrival if required. 

During the summer season the potted roses we supply have their more established root systems, and unless otherwise labelled will also be ready to replant into borders or larger containers straight away.
